In the United States, we tend to be stuck on ourselves. It is easy and tempting to surround ourselves with like-minded people and comfortably exist in our own bubble. This class is meant to do the very opposite. The goal of this class is to challenge your perception of the world and introduce you to the cultures, values, and historical perspectives of others from around the world. This is a world history class and it is designed to give particular attention to areas of the globe that are rarely covered in other classes. Of course, the world is a huge place, with countless rich cultures and diverse people. Because this is a fifteen week course, it will be impossible for us to cover everything and difficult choices have been made concerning what to cover. The goal is that you will come out of the class with knowing a little bit about all major regions of the world, the people that live there, their cultures and history, and how they have contributed to making the world that we all inhabit as humans in the twenty -first century. Most importantly, you will also learn to seek the historical context for current world events. Hopefully, everyone will come out of this class ready to engage in an increasingly diverse world more informed about global events and people that have shaped it.
